Project Description
The Atlanta Watershed Learning Network (AWLN) brings together residents from some of Metro Atlanta’s most highly impacted watersheds and seeks to help these residents gain the knowledge and skills needed to revitalize their watersheds and advocate for community-oriented development. Residents are prepared to support projects that provide the greatest environmental, economic, and social justice outcomes for their communities, while also working to improve the health of the larger river systems in the Metro Atlanta area. Program training modules include: Why We Organize, Watershed Education, Urban Planning, Community Driven Solutions and Watershed Management.
AWLN Youth Programming
AWLN Youth Summer Program is an opportunity for youth to receive a hands-on learning experience in various areas like environmental health, sustainability, leadership, finances, and nutrition. The summer youth program runs 6 weeks offering paid opportunities from $15/hr for Youth Interns and $25/hr for Program Coordinators positions. Weekly journaling, presentations with guest speakers, workshops, field trips, activities, and an end of program celebration are provided. In 2024, over 50 youth interns participated in the summer internship program.
Operation AWLN
Operation AWLN aims to ensure the longevity and promise of the Atlanta Watershed Learning Network. To enhance the sustainability of the network, the effort will 1) articulate a vision statement for AWLN, 2) create an operations manual to document the processes and timelines of AWLN cohorts, from recruitment to alumni support, 3) maintain an alumni database, 4) develop outreach materials, such as a logo and newsletter, 5) assess and update AWLN curriculum, and 6) identify organizational gaps and opportunities.
